A report by the St Vincent de Paul Society has shown that the average household’s energy bills (gas and electricity) has risen by as much as $1100 over the past four years in some areas. In particular, electricity prices have increased between 60 to 80 per cent, dependent on the region and electricity retailer. This shows that the average Victorian household will have to pay an extra $300 for their energy bills this financial year. According to Gavin Dufty, St Vincent de Paul Society’s policy and research manager, around 8 per cent of the increase could be as a result of the carbon tax.
