Pacific Gas & Electricity (PG&E), a San Francisco based utility company has announced that it expects solar to account for 40 per cent of its renewable energy portfolio by 2020. In 2011, PG&E mostly focused on generating renewable energy from wind, bioenergy, geothermal and hydropower, with solar power only accounting for 1 per cent of its renewable energy portfolio. PG&E has already signed 27 solar power contracts adding to over 2300MW in solar power and an additional 14 solar thermal projects since 2002.
It is predicted that as a result of California’s “Renewable Portfolio Standard” law, utilities will be required to purchase 33 per cent of their electricity from renewable sources by 2020. With that in mind, solar power is expected to account for California’s main form of renewable energy by 2020.
