The Solar Cities program is a $94 million program supported by the Australian government with a partnership with the industry, business and local communities to trial sustainable energy solutions. The seven solar cities include Adelaide, Alice Springs, Blacktown, Central Victoria, Moreland, Perth and Townsville.
The second Solar Cities Community Engagement Paper was published in October 2012. The paper had effectively highlighted what worked and did not work on each of the solar cities and the importance of community engagement with each solar city program.
Strategies that helped improve the engagement of solar cities included personalised interaction to bringing the trials to households, financial incentives that had motivated households to undertake energy efficient measures including solar power, visibility such as the display of solar panels on infrastructure and shopfronts, smart meters and social marketing.
