A recent report published by the Department of Physical Geography and Quatemary Geology from Stockholm University titled “Energy Policy 2012” indicates that Western Australia could power the world’s electricity needs by 50 times by installing concentrated solar thermal power (CSP) in certain areas in central WA.
The report estimates areas suitable for concentrated solar thermal power to give a more accurate figure to encourage solar power investments. It is said that the total amount of energy that can be collected from solar in “technically suitable areas” is 908,000 terrawatt hours annually. However, whilst this may be the case, other factors need to be taken into consideration including the cost and availability for infrastructure, as well as water to be used for cooling.
